Photosynthesis: explain question

Explain6 marksChallenge

A student extracted pigments from a variegated leaf and separated them using paper chromatography with a solvent that travelled 12.0 cm from the origin. The distances travelled by each pigment are shown in the table.

PigmentDistance travelled (cm)
Chlorophyll b4.8
Chlorophyll a7.2
Xanthophyll9.6
Carotene11.4

The student also measured the absorption spectra of each pigment (not shown here).

Explain how the separation of pigments on the chromatogram relates to their chemical properties and their roles in photosynthesis.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
