Selection and evolution: describe question

Describe6 marksChallenge

In a study of a species of deer, researchers measured body mass (kg) and recorded coat colour (either light brown or dark brown) in two populations: one from a lowland area and one from a highland area.

(a) Describe the difference between continuous variation and discontinuous variation, using body mass and coat colour as examples. In your answer, state the genetic basis of each type.

(b) The researchers want to compare the mean body mass of the two populations. Describe how a t-test could be used to analyse these data.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
