Analytical techniques: suggest question

Suggest4 marksStandard

A sample of chloromethane, CHX3Cl\ce{CH3Cl}, is analysed by mass spectrometry. The mass spectrum shows a molecular ion peak at m/e=50m/e = 50 and another peak at m/e=52m/e = 52. The relative abundance of the peak at m/e=52m/e = 52 is about one third of the abundance of the peak at m/e=50m/e = 50.

Suggest and explain the origin of the peak at m/e=52m/e = 52.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Suggest means: Apply what you know to an unfamiliar situation. There may be more than one acceptable answer. Reason from the principle you have learned to the new context, and say which principle you are using.
