Atomic structure: suggest question

Suggest4 marksStandard

A demonstration tube contains two parallel metal plates so that a uniform electric field is set up between them. One plate is positively charged and the other is negatively charged.

Three separate beams of particles, one of protons, one of neutrons and one of electrons, are fired through the tube in turn. Each beam travels at the same velocity and enters the field at right angles to the direction of the field.

Suggest what happens to each of the three beams as it passes through the field, giving a reason in each case. Suggest also, with a reason, how the path of the electron beam differs from the path of the proton beam.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Suggest means: Apply what you know to an unfamiliar situation. There may be more than one acceptable answer. Reason from the principle you have learned to the new context, and say which principle you are using.
