Carbonyl compounds: describe question

Describe6 marksChallenge

A liquid suspected to be a carbonyl compound is mixed with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine reagent and warmed. An orange precipitate forms. In a separate experiment, the liquid is warmed with Fehling's solution and no change is observed. A sample of the liquid is warmed with alkaline iodine solution and a yellow precipitate forms.

Describe the information these three tests give about the liquid, and explain what the results show about the structure of the carbonyl compound present.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
