Carboxylic acids and derivatives: describe question

Describe7 marksChallenge

A student has samples of propan-1-ol and propanal and wishes to prepare propanoic acid from each.

Describe the reagents and conditions needed to oxidise propan-1-ol to propanoic acid, and outline how the product could be separated from the aldehyde that forms as an intermediate.

Describe how propanal could be oxidised to propanoic acid. State the observation that shows oxidation has occurred.

The student then reacts the propanoic acid with three different substances. For each reaction, state the reagent, the conditions, and the organic product formed.

(a) a reactive metal (b) an alkali (c) a carbonate (d) lithium tetrahydridoaluminate(III)

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
