Chemical energetics: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

Entropy, SS, is defined as the number of possible arrangements of particles and their energy in a system.

Compare the entropy change, ΔS\Delta S, for the following two processes. Predict the sign of ΔS\Delta S for each process and explain your predictions, referring to the definition of entropy.

Process 1: Freezing of water at 0∘C0^\circ\text{C}.

Process 2: The thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate:

CaCOX3(s)→CaO(s)+COX2(g)\ce{CaCO3(s) -> CaO(s) + CO2(g)}

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
