Chemical energetics: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

The standard enthalpy change for the hydration of ethene, CX2HX4(g)+HX2O(l)→CX2HX5OH(l)\ce{C2H4(g) + H2O(l) -> C2H5OH(l)}, can be determined using Hess's law in two ways.

Way 1: Using standard enthalpies of formation of CX2HX4(g)\ce{C2H4(g)}, HX2O(l)\ce{H2O(l)} and CX2HX5OH(l)\ce{C2H5OH(l)}.

Way 2: Using standard enthalpies of combustion of CX2HX4(g)\ce{C2H4(g)}, CX2HX5OH(l)\ce{C2H5OH(l)} and HX2(g)\ce{H2(g)}.

Compare the two ways in terms of the construction of the energy cycles involved. Do not include any numerical calculations.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
