Chemical energetics: explain question

Explain4 marksStandard

Consider the following changes:

(a) The dissolution of ammonium nitrate in water:

NHX4NOX3(s)→NHX4X+(aq)+NOX3X−(aq)\ce{NH4NO3(s) -> NH4+(aq) + NO3-(aq)}

(b) The decomposition of ammonia:

2 NHX3(g)→NX2(g)+3 HX2(g)\ce{2NH3(g) -> N2(g) + 3H2(g)}

For each change, predict the sign of the entropy change (ΔS\Delta S) and explain your reasoning in terms of the number of possible arrangements of the particles and their energy.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
