Chemical energetics: explain question

Explain4 marksStandard

The decomposition of calcium carbonate is represented by the equation:

CaCOX3(s)→CaO(s)+COX2(g)\ce{CaCO3(s) -> CaO(s) + CO2(g)}

For this reaction, ΔH=+178 kJ mol−1\Delta H = +178\ \text{kJ mol}^{-1} and ΔS=+160 J K−1mol−1\Delta S = +160\ \text{J K}^{-1}\text{mol}^{-1}.

The reaction is not feasible at 298 K298\ \text{K} but becomes feasible at high temperatures.

Use the Gibbs equation to explain this observation.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
