Electrochemistry: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

Chlorine is bubbled into cold dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide, forming sodium chloride and sodium chlorate(I).

Reaction 1: ClX2+2 NaOH→NaCl+NaClO+HX2O\ce{Cl2 + 2NaOH -> NaCl + NaClO + H2O}

With hot concentrated aqueous sodium hydroxide, the product is sodium chlorate(V) instead.

Reaction 2: 3 ClX2+6 NaOH→5 NaCl+NaClOX3+3 HX2O\ce{3Cl2 + 6NaOH -> 5NaCl + NaClO3 + 3H2O}

Compare the redox behaviour of chlorine in these two reactions. For each reaction, use oxidation numbers and electron transfer to identify the species that is oxidised and the species that is reduced, give the oxidation number of chlorine in each chlorine-containing product using a Roman numeral where appropriate, and state whether chlorine acts as an oxidising agent, a reducing agent, or both.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
