Electrochemistry: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

Two reactions are shown below.

Reaction 1: 2 FeClX3(aq)+Zn(s)→2 FeClX2(aq)+ZnClX2(aq)\ce{2FeCl3(aq) + Zn(s) -> 2FeCl2(aq) + ZnCl2(aq)}

Reaction 2: ClX2(g)+2 NaOH(aq)→NaCl(aq)+NaClO(aq)+HX2O(l)\ce{Cl2(g) + 2NaOH(aq) -> NaCl(aq) + NaClO(aq) + H2O(l)}

Compare the redox changes in these two reactions. In your answer you should:

  • state the oxidation number changes for each element that changes oxidation state in both reactions,
  • identify the oxidising agent and reducing agent in each reaction,
  • explain what is meant by disproportionation and state, with a reason, which reaction involves disproportionation.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
