Electrochemistry: describe question

Describe5 marksChallenge

A student writes the following equation for the reaction between zinc and iron(III) sulfate and believes it is balanced.

Zn+FeX2(SOX4)X3→ZnSOX4+FeSOX4\ce{Zn + Fe2(SO4)3 -> ZnSO4 + FeSO4}

Describe how changes in oxidation number are used to show that this equation is not balanced and to deduce the correct coefficients. In your answer, use a Roman numeral to indicate the oxidation number of iron in iron(III) sulfate, identify which substance is oxidised and which is reduced in terms of electron transfer, and name the oxidising agent and the reducing agent.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
