Electrochemistry: suggest question

Suggest5 marksChallenge

Magnesium burns in nitrogen to form magnesium nitride, MgX3NX2\ce{Mg3N2}. The unbalanced equation is:

Mg(s)+NX2(g)→MgX3NX2(s)\ce{Mg(s) + N2(g) -> Mg3N2(s)}

Suggest how oxidation numbers can be used to balance this equation, and identify the oxidising agent and the reducing agent in the reaction. In your answer, state the oxidation number of each element in the reactants and in the product, and explain the change in each case.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Suggest means: Apply what you know to an unfamiliar situation. There may be more than one acceptable answer. Reason from the principle you have learned to the new context, and say which principle you are using.
