Electrochemistry: compare question

Compare6 marksChallenge

Aluminium chloride can be electrolysed either as a molten salt or as an aqueous solution. In both cases, graphite electrodes are used.

Compare the products formed at the anode and at the cathode in the two cases, and explain why the products differ. Refer to the relative electrode potentials of the species present and to the state of the electrolyte.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
