Electrochemistry: describe question

Describe5 marksStandard

Zinc metal is added to an aqueous solution of iron(III) sulfate. The reaction produces zinc sulfate and iron(II) sulfate.

Describe this reaction in terms of electron transfer and changes in oxidation number. Identify the oxidising agent and the reducing agent, giving a reason for each, and use the oxidation-number changes to write the balanced equation for the reaction. Use Roman numerals when you state oxidation numbers.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
