Equilibria: compare question

Compare7 marksChallenge

Two separate gas-phase equilibria are set up in closed containers. In container 1, PClX5(g)⇌PClX3(g)+ClX2(g)\ce{PCl5(g) <=> PCl3(g) + Cl2(g)}. In container 2, NX2OX4(g)⇌2 NOX2(g)\ce{N2O4(g) <=> 2NO2(g)}. Both systems are allowed to reach dynamic equilibrium at the same temperature.

Compare the two equilibria in terms of:

(a) the expression for the equilibrium constant in terms of partial pressures, KpK_p, for each reaction, using the terms partial pressure and mole fraction;

(b) the effect on the position of equilibrium of an increase in pressure;

(c) the effect on the value of KpK_p of adding a catalyst.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
