Nitrogen and sulfur: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

Nitrogen, NX2\ce{N2}, is an element and ammonia, NHX3\ce{NH3}, is one of its compounds. They behave very differently.

(a) Nitrogen is unreactive at room temperature, whereas ammonia is readily attacked by acids and dissolves in water. Explain this difference in reactivity in terms of the bonding in the two molecules.

(b) Ammonia gas can be displaced from ammonium chloride by heating with sodium hydroxide. Write an equation for this reaction and explain, in terms of acid–base behaviour, why ammonia is displaced.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
