Nitrogen and sulfur: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

A student investigates the reactions of ammonia with two different compounds.

In the first experiment, ammonia gas is bubbled through an aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride.

In the second experiment, solid ammonium chloride is warmed with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide.

Compare these two reactions. In your answer, identify the type of reaction occurring in each case and describe, in terms of the Brønsted–Lowry theory, what happens to the proton in each reaction.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
