Organic synthesis: explain question

Explain5 marksChallenge

A student plans to prepare compound X, whose structure contains a benzene ring with both a carboxyl group and an amide group. The proposed route is:

Step 1: methylbenzene is refluxed with acidified potassium manganate(VII). Step 2: the product of Step 1 is treated with an excess of NHX3\ce{NH3} under high pressure and heat. Step 3: the product of Step 2 is treated with SOClX2\ce{SOCl2}. Step 4: the product of Step 3 is treated with an excess of NHX3\ce{NH3}.

Explain why this route would not produce compound X, and state what the actual organic product of each step would be.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
