Organic synthesis: compare question

Compare7 marksChallenge

An unknown organic compound, CX3HX6OX2\ce{C3H6O2}, is treated with separate samples of sodium carbonate, Tollens' reagent, and bromine water. The observations are recorded.

  1. With sodium carbonate, effervescence is seen.
  2. With Tollens' reagent, no silver mirror forms.
  3. With bromine water, the colour is unchanged.

Compare the information from the three tests to identify the functional groups present in the compound. In your answer, state the functional group responsible for each observation, and explain why the other two tests give the results they do.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
