Reaction kinetics: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

The activation energy, EAE_\text{A}, of a reaction is the minimum energy required for a collision to be effective. Two reactions, P and Q, have activation energies of 50 kJ mol−150 \text{ kJ mol}^{-1} and 100 kJ mol−1100 \text{ kJ mol}^{-1}, respectively. Both reactions are carried out at 300 K300 \text{ K}. The temperature of each reaction mixture is increased by 10 K10 \text{ K} to 310 K310 \text{ K}.

Compare the effect of this temperature increase on the rates of reactions P and Q. Your answer should refer to the Boltzmann distribution.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
