Reaction kinetics: suggest question

Suggest5 marksChallenge

The enzyme sucrase catalyses the hydrolysis of sucrose to glucose and fructose. In the absence of the enzyme the reaction is extremely slow, but in its presence the reaction proceeds rapidly at body temperature.

Suggest how the presence of sucrase increases the rate of this reaction. In your answer refer to the mechanism of the reaction, the Boltzmann distribution, and the reaction pathway diagram.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Suggest means: Apply what you know to an unfamiliar situation. There may be more than one acceptable answer. Reason from the principle you have learned to the new context, and say which principle you are using.
