Reaction kinetics: describe question

Describe7 marksChallenge

A student investigates the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, HX2OX2\ce{H2O2}, which slowly decomposes to water and oxygen at room temperature. Adding a small amount of solid manganese(IV) oxide, MnOX2\ce{MnO2}, causes rapid effervescence.

Describe how the heterogeneous catalyst MnOX2\ce{MnO2} increases the rate of this reaction. In your answer, explain the change in mechanism, use the Boltzmann distribution to account for the increase in rate, and describe how the reaction pathway diagram would differ in the presence of the catalyst.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
