Kinematics of motion in a straight line: calculation question

4 marksStandard

A train starts from rest and accelerates uniformly for 2 seconds, reaching a speed of 6 m/s. It then travels at constant speed for 8 seconds, before decelerating uniformly to rest over a period of 2 seconds. The motion is modelled as a straight-line velocity–time graph.

  1. (a)

Find the total displacement of the train during this journey.

How this question is marked

4 marks. Method marks are awarded for correct working even if the final answer is wrong, and a later part can still score if it correctly uses an earlier wrong answer.
