Cell membranes and transport: compare question

Compare7 marksChallenge

A student set up four Visking tubing bags, each containing 10 cm³ of a sucrose solution at a different concentration. Each bag was placed in a separate beaker of distilled water for 30 minutes. The initial and final masses of each bag were recorded. The table shows the percentage change in mass for each bag.

BagSucrose concentration / mol dm⁻³Percentage change in mass
A0.0+0.2
B0.2+3.5
C0.4+7.1
D0.6+10.8

Compare the movement of water into each bag in terms of water potential and explain why the percentage change in mass differs between the bags.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
