Classification, biodiversity and conservation: explain question

Explain5 marksChallenge

The Mountain capuchin (Cebus montanus) is an endangered primate endemic to the Sierra Blanca mountains. Its population has declined sharply due to deforestation for agriculture, reduced fruit availability caused by climate change, and hunting for bushmeat. An invasive rat species also preys on capuchin eggs.

Explain the importance of maintaining biodiversity, with reference to the Mountain capuchin, and explain how ex situ conservation methods and international agreements could be used to help prevent the extinction of this species.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
