Classification, biodiversity and conservation: outline question

Outline6 marksChallenge

A biologist investigating microbial diversity in a hot spring discovers two new entities.

Entity X is a unicellular organism with cells that lack a nucleus. Chemical analysis shows its cell walls do not contain peptidoglycan, and its membrane lipids have ether linkages between glycerol and fatty acids. Its ribosomes are of a type found only in certain prokaryotes.

Entity Y is an acellular agent that causes disease in a species of thermophilic bacterium. It contains double-stranded RNA as its genetic material and no DNA.

Outline, using the information provided, how each entity would be classified according to the current biological classification system. Include in your answer reference to the domains, kingdoms (where applicable), species concepts, and the basis for virus classification.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Outline means: Give the main points briefly. Less detail than describe, but every key step has to be there. One short line per step, in order. The marks are for coverage, not depth.
