Enzymes: describe question

Describe5 marksStandard

A student investigated the effect of substrate concentration on the activity of the enzyme dipeptidase from the thermophilic bacterium Bacillus caldox. The enzyme catalyses the hydrolysis of a synthetic dipeptide, X. The initial rate of reaction was measured at each substrate concentration. The results are shown in the table below.

Describe the effect of substrate concentration on the rate of this enzyme-catalysed reaction and explain why further increases in substrate concentration beyond a certain point do not increase the rate.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
