The mitotic cell cycle: explain question

Explain6 marksChallenge

A researcher observes mitosis in cells from both a plant (onion root tip) and an animal (newt lung epithelium) under a microscope. In prophase, the researcher notes differences in the way the spindle fibres first appear. In both cell types, the nuclear envelope disappears by late prophase.

Explain the events that occur to the nuclear envelope and the spindle fibres during prophase and metaphase of mitosis. In your answer, include how the spindle fibres connect to chromosomes and how the behaviour of the spindle differs between plant and animal cells.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
