The mitotic cell cycle: describe question

Describe4 marksStandard

A student examines a stained squash preparation of cells from a garlic root tip. One cell appears as follows: the chromosomes are condensed and each is seen as a single chromatid; the chromosomes are being pulled towards opposite poles of the cell, with some already closer to the poles. Spindle fibres are visible attached to the centromeres. No nuclear envelope is visible, and the cell surface membrane shows no indentation.

Identify the stage of mitosis shown. Describe the behaviour of the chromosomes, the nuclear envelope, and the spindle apparatus during this stage.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
