Photosynthesis: predict question

Predict4 marksStandard

An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of light intensity on the light-dependent stage of photosynthesis. A suspension of isolated chloroplasts was mixed with DCPIP, a blue redox indicator that becomes colourless when reduced. The mixture was placed at different distances from a lamp to vary light intensity, and the time taken for the DCPIP to become colourless was recorded. The results are shown below:

Light intensity (lux)Time for decolourisation (s)
0No decolourisation after 10 min
500240
1000120
150080
200060

Predict the effect on the time taken for DCPIP to become colourless if the light intensity is reduced from 1500 lux to 500 lux. Explain your answer.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Predict means: Say what you expect to happen, using the information given. State the outcome clearly first. If marks remain, add the reason that leads to it.
