An unknown organic compound, suspected to be an ester, is analysed by infrared spectroscopy. The spectrum shows a strong absorption at 1740 cm, a strong broad absorption between 2500 and 3300 cm, and a strong absorption at 1715 cm. Suggest what the compound is likely to be, and explain how the infrared spectrum supports your suggestion. Use the following data: O–H (carboxylic acid) absorbs at 2500–3300 cm (broad); C=O in an ester absorbs at 1735–1750 cm; C=O in a carboxylic acid absorbs at 1710–1720 cm.

How this question is marked
7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.
Suggest means: Apply what you know to an unfamiliar situation. There may be more than one acceptable answer. Reason from the principle you have learned to the new context, and say which principle you are using.
