Analytical techniques: explain question

Explain4 marksStandard

A mixture of three alkanes (pentane, hexane, heptane) is analysed by gas-liquid chromatography using a non-polar stationary phase (a high boiling point alkane on a solid support) and nitrogen as the mobile phase. The chromatogram shows three peaks with the following retention times and peak areas:

PeakRetention time / minPeak area (arbitrary units)
A2.1120
B3.580
C5.8200

(a) Explain why the three alkanes have different retention times. In your answer, refer to the interaction between each alkane and the stationary phase.

(b) Describe how the percentage composition of the mixture can be determined from the chromatogram.

(c) Identify which peak (A, B or C) corresponds to pentane. Explain your reasoning.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
