Describe5 marksStandard

The enthalpy change of atomisation, ΔHat\Delta H_{at}, is one of the energy terms used in a Born-Haber cycle for an ionic compound.

(a) Define the enthalpy change of atomisation, ΔHat\Delta H_{at}.

(b) In a Born-Haber cycle for sodium chloride, NaCl\ce{NaCl}, the enthalpy change of atomisation of sodium is +107 kJ mol−1^{-1}. Explain why this value is positive, and state what this term represents in the cycle.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
