Chemistry of transition elements: compare question

Compare6 marksChallenge

A student prepares two aqueous solutions of copper(II) sulfate. To one solution, an excess of concentrated hydrochloric acid is added; to the other, an excess of concentrated ammonia solution is added. In each case, a ligand exchange occurs. The solution with concentrated hydrochloric acid appears green, while the solution with concentrated ammonia appears deep blue.

Compare the two ligand exchanges in terms of the ligands involved, the change in the splitting energy, the frequency of light absorbed, and the reason for the observed colours.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
