Electrochemistry: compare question

Compare6 marksChallenge

In acidic solution, sulfite ions, SOX3X2−\ce{SO3^{2-}}, are oxidised to sulfate ions, SOX4X2−\ce{SO4^{2-}}, by dichromate ions, CrX2OX7X2−\ce{Cr2O7^{2-}}, which are reduced to chromium(III) ions, CrX3+\ce{Cr^{3+}}.

Compare oxidation and reduction in this reaction in terms of electron transfer and changes in oxidation number. In your answer you should:

  • state the oxidation number of sulfur in SOX3X2−\ce{SO3^{2-}} and in SOX4X2−\ce{SO4^{2-}},
  • state the oxidation number of chromium in CrX2OX7X2−\ce{Cr2O7^{2-}} and in CrX3+\ce{Cr^{3+}},
  • identify which species is the oxidising agent and which is the reducing agent,
  • use the oxidation number changes to help balance the equation for the reaction.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
