Equilibria: describe question

Describe7 marksChallenge

A student is studying buffer solutions and solubility equilibria.

(a) Describe how a buffer solution can be prepared using ethanoic acid and sodium ethanoate. Include an equation to show how this buffer resists a change in pH when a small amount of aqueous sodium hydroxide is added.

(b) The hydrogencarbonate ion, HCOX3X−\ce{HCO3-}, is part of the buffer system that controls the pH of human blood.

Describe the role of HCOX3X−\ce{HCO3-} in this buffer system. Identify the conjugate acid–base pair involved.

(c) Describe the meaning of the term solubility product, KspK_{\mathrm{sp}}, and write an expression for KspK_{\mathrm{sp}} for calcium phosphate, CaX3(POX4)X2\ce{Ca3(PO4)2}.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
