Equilibria: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

Two separate gas-phase reactions are at equilibrium in closed containers at constant temperature.

Reaction 1: NX2(g)+3 HX2(g)⇌2 NHX3(g)\ce{N2(g) + 3H2(g) <=> 2NH3(g)}, ΔH=−92.4 kJ mol−1\Delta H = -92.4\ \text{kJ mol}^{-1}

Reaction 2: HX2(g)+IX2(g)⇌2 HI(g)\ce{H2(g) + I2(g) <=> 2HI(g)}, ΔH=+9.6 kJ mol−1\Delta H = +9.6\ \text{kJ mol}^{-1}

Compare the effect of increasing pressure and increasing temperature on the position of equilibrium of these two reactions. In your answer, state one similarity in the behaviour of the two equilibria under other changes in conditions.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
