Nitrogen compounds: describe question

Describe6 marksChallenge

A student prepares butanenitrile, CHX3CHX2CHX2CN\ce{CH3CH2CH2CN}, and then hydrolyses separate samples of it under two different conditions.

Sample 1 is heated under reflux with dilute hydrochloric acid.

Sample 2 is heated under reflux with dilute sodium hydroxide, and the mixture is then acidified.

Describe the similarities and differences between the reactions of the two samples, and state the organic product formed in each case.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
