Organic synthesis: explain question

Explain7 marksChallenge

A student plans to prepare 2-hydroxybutanenitrile, CHX3CHX2CH(OH)CN\ce{CH3CH2CH(OH)CN}, starting from propanal, CHX3CHX2CHO\ce{CH3CH2CHO}. The proposed route is:

  1. propanal is treated with an excess of hydrogen cyanide, HCN\ce{HCN}, and a small amount of potassium cyanide, KCN\ce{KCN}, is added.
  2. the product of step 1 is warmed with dilute aqueous sulfuric acid, HX2SOX4\ce{H2SO4}.

Explain, with reference to the functional groups and reactions involved, why step 1 produces the desired compound, why step 2 is necessary, and what by-product could form in step 1. In your answer, name the type of reaction in each step and state the role of the KCN\ce{KCN}.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
