Organic synthesis: describe question

Describe6 marksChallenge

Methyl salicylate, HOCX6HX4COOCHX3\ce{HOC6H4COOCH3}, is hydrolysed with aqueous sodium hydroxide to form sodium salicylate, NaOOC−CX6HX4−OH\ce{NaOOC-C6H4-OH}. The sodium salicylate is then acidified to form salicylic acid, HOOC−CX6HX4−OH\ce{HOOC-C6H4-OH}. Salicylic acid is converted to aspirin, CHX3COO−CX6HX4−COOH\ce{CH3COO-C6H4-COOH}, by reaction with ethanoic anhydride.

Describe the type of reaction and the reagents and conditions for each of the three steps in this synthesis of aspirin. In your answer, state the functional group present in methyl salicylate that reacts in the first step, and identify one possible by-product of the final step.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
