Reaction kinetics: suggest question

Suggest5 marksChallenge

The reaction between hydrogen and iodine monochloride,

HX2(g)+2 ICl(g)→IX2(g)+2 HCl(g)\ce{H2(g) + 2ICl(g) -> I2(g) + 2HCl(g)}

is carried out in a closed container at constant temperature.

The pressure of the gas mixture is increased by reducing the volume of the container.

Suggest how the rate of this reaction is affected by this increase in pressure. Explain your answer in terms of effective collisions.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Suggest means: Apply what you know to an unfamiliar situation. There may be more than one acceptable answer. Reason from the principle you have learned to the new context, and say which principle you are using.
