Cell membranes and transport: describe question

Describe5 marksChallenge

A student investigated the water potential of potato tissue. Cylinders of potato were cut and their mass recorded. Each cylinder was placed in a different concentration of sucrose solution. After 24 hours, each cylinder was removed, blotted dry, and reweighed. The percentage change in mass was calculated. The results are shown in the table below.

Concentration of sucrose solution / mol dm⁻³Percentage change in mass
0.0+12.4
0.1+6.8
0.2+2.1
0.3-3.5
0.4-9.7
0.5-15.2

Describe how the student could use these results to estimate the water potential of the potato tissue.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
