Cell structure: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

A microbiologist examines two cell samples using an electron microscope: Sample A from a liver biopsy and Sample B from a culture of Escherichia coli. In Sample A, ribosomes are observed both attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum and free in the cytoplasm. In Sample B, numerous ribosomes are scattered throughout the cytoplasm but no rough endoplasmic reticulum is present.

Compare the ribosomes found in Sample A and Sample B in terms of their size, location, and function.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
