Classification, biodiversity and conservation: compare question

Compare7 marksChallenge

A researcher studies two populations of small mammals, one living in a coastal forest and the other in an inland grassland. The animals are morphologically very similar, with only slight differences in fur colour. They produce distinct mating calls and do not interbreed in the wild. However, when individuals are brought together in captivity, they mate and produce fertile offspring.

With reference to the biological, morphological and ecological species concepts, compare how each concept would classify these two populations. Give reasons for your answer.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
