Enzymes: explain question

Explain5 marksChallenge

A researcher investigates the effect of an inhibitor X on the enzyme 'Formase', which catalyses the conversion of formate to carbon dioxide. The initial rate of reaction was measured at various substrate concentrations in the presence and absence of inhibitor X, with all other conditions (optimal pH 7.4 using phosphate buffer, 37°C) kept constant. The results are shown in the table:

[Substrate] / mMRate without inhibitor (arbitrary units)Rate with inhibitor X (arbitrary units)
0.5105
1.0169
2.02214
5.02721
10.03029

Explain whether inhibitor X is a competitive or non-competitive inhibitor. Use the data to support your answer, and explain how the values of Vmax and Km change in the presence of the inhibitor.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
