Chemical energetics: explain question

Explain4 marksStandard

The table below shows some enthalpy data for sodium chloride and magnesium chloride.

CompoundLattice enthalpy / kJ mol⁻¹Hydration enthalpy of cation / kJ mol⁻¹Hydration enthalpy of chloride ion / kJ mol⁻¹
NaCl-770-410-350
MgCl₂-2500-1900-350

The hydration enthalpy of the chloride ion is the same for both compounds. Explain why the enthalpy change of solution of magnesium chloride is more exothermic (more negative) than that of sodium chloride. Use an energy cycle in your explanation.

How this question is marked

4 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 4 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
