Chemical energetics: describe question

Describe6 marksChallenge

Methanol, CHX3OH(l)\ce{CH3OH(l)}, burns completely in oxygen to form COX2(g)\ce{CO2(g)} and HX2O(l)\ce{H2O(l)}.

CHX3OH(l)+32 OX2(g)→COX2(g)+2 HX2O(l)\ce{CH3OH(l) + 3/2 O2(g) -> CO2(g) + 2H2O(l)}

The standard enthalpy change of this combustion can be determined from the standard enthalpies of formation of CHX3OH(l)\ce{CH3OH(l)}, COX2(g)\ce{CO2(g)} and HX2O(l)\ce{H2O(l)}.

Describe how you would construct a Hess's law energy cycle for this determination, including the species placed at each level and the enthalpy changes shown on the arrows of the cycle.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
