Chemical energetics: suggest question

Suggest7 marksChallenge

Two experiments are carried out at 25.0 °C and 101 kPa to measure the enthalpy change of neutralisation. In each experiment, 50.0 cm³ of 1.00 mol dm⁻³ acid is mixed with 50.0 cm³ of 1.00 mol dm⁻³ sodium hydroxide in a polystyrene cup. With hydrochloric acid the maximum temperature recorded is 31.4 °C; with ethanoic acid the maximum temperature recorded is 29.1 °C.

Suggest why the temperature rise is smaller with ethanoic acid, and suggest three reasons why the measured temperature rise is lower than the value expected from the accepted enthalpy change of neutralisation.

How this question is marked

7 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 7 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Suggest means: Apply what you know to an unfamiliar situation. There may be more than one acceptable answer. Reason from the principle you have learned to the new context, and say which principle you are using.
